How the arena works

01

Vote

Pick the thumbnail you'd click. Each vote moves both ELO ratings and earns you a credit.

02

Upload

Credits put your own thumbnails into the rotation, where strangers judge them in half a second. Like the feed does.

03

Read the number

ELO tells you which design wins. Style tags tell you why, across everything on the site.

What Thumbsmash is

Thumbsmash is a free arena for YouTube thumbnails. Upload one and it gets thrown into head-to-head matchups against other creators' work, framed like the YouTube feed so voters judge it the way viewers would. Every vote moves an ELO rating, the same math chess uses. After a few dozen matchups you have a number instead of a hunch.

Anyone can vote, no account needed, up to 30 matchups a day. Sign in and each vote earns a credit, and credits are what put your own uploads in front of other voters. A vision model tags every upload's style on arrival, so the leaderboard can show whether big faces, bold text, or arrows are carrying the week.

Why votes instead of analytics

YouTube's built-in A/B test tells you what happened after you published. Thumbsmash covers the step before that: cheap, fast signal while the design can still change. Fifty strangers picking between two options in half a second each is a surprisingly good stand-in for the feed.

The preview page handles the other half of the job, dropping your thumbnail into a realistic grid in either YouTube theme so you can see whether it still pulls your eye before you publish anywhere.
